It has to be one of the wonders of the modern world - a
stunning piece of human craft dropped into the natural magnificence of Sydney's
harbour. There really is little to compare - even Rio's Christ the Redeemer and
New York's Statue of Liberty can quite match the grandeur of both the building
and the backdrop.
It thrusts into the waters of Sydney Harbour with the tall,
gracious white curves like the sails of the flagship HMS Sirius leading the
first colonists to the shore here in 1786. It symbolises both the foundation of
Australia as a country, but also its continued progress - the bold nature of
Australia's truly modern culture.
